Sponsoring

Sponsorship for Walk to Emmaus

Emmaus Ministries takes a different approach to recruitment than many church-related efforts. For its Walk to Emmaus, Emmaus uses a one-on-one method that is more consistent with the movement’s message: sponsorship.

Emmaus Community members want to share the gift of their Emmaus experience with others. Sponsorship provides a caring, disciplined way to do so, enabling God’s gift of grace to be passed on through the Emmaus movement. The fact that the Emmaus experience passes from person to person reflects the relational nature of God and the manner in which God purposefully reaches out to people through people. The personal character of sponsorship underlines God’s personal care and commitment to each participant. Sponsors help make the Emmaus experience an act of sacrificial love from beginning to end—something more than the usual church retreat or religious education function.

Why Good Sponsorship Matters

Many Communities take sponsorship for granted, assuming everyone knows the how and why. Sometimes discussions focus only on filling event rosters. However, good sponsorship is the very reason healthy Communities rarely cancel Walks for lack of participants. It is vital to the Emmaus movement; therefore, every Emmaus Community continually educates its members on the role and importance of good sponsorship.

Good sponsorship begins with prayerful discernment. It aims to bring spiritual revitalization to active Christians (and those seeking renewal) so they can bring new life and vision to their churches, homes, workplaces, and communities. It is the first act of agape love before the Walk even begins.

Who Can Sponsor?

Any person who has participated in a Walk to Emmaus (or another recognized three-day movement) and understands the responsibilities can sponsor. The best sponsors are those who know the candidate well and can commit to supporting them fully—before, during, and after the Walk.

Who Makes a Good Candidate?

Walk to Emmaus is designed for active adult church members (18 and older) whose personal renewal will energize their service to Christ in daily life. Sponsors prayerfully consider church leaders, dependable members, those hungering for deeper faith, and others whose renewed commitment will strengthen the body of Christ.

Financial Considerations

Money should never be a reason not to sponsor. Emmaus of Southeast Michigan offers scholarships so that cost is not a barrier. Contact the Registrar or a Board member to request scholarship support for your pilgrim.

The Heart of Sponsorship

Sponsorship is an act of love—for God, for the participant, for the Emmaus Community, and for the church. It is a living demonstration of agape love. Through sponsorship, we become instruments of God’s design and prevenient grace.

If you feel called to sponsor someone for an upcoming Walk, reach out to the Emmaus Community. We provide training, resources, and support to help you live out this vital ministry role. Together, we continue the journey of faith, one person at a time.
